92 Proofs were struck; due to economic conditions in America during 1892-1893, most were melted and maybe two dozen survive today.

This fresh-t0-the-market example is the finest Proof 1892 half eagle that I have seen or am aware of and it is also one of the most aesthetically appealing Proof half eagles of this type. In 1892, the US Mint had really nailed the technology to make two-tone proof silver and gold coins and the contrast seen on many gold coins from this year is exhilarating; even by these standards this two-tone Gem is amazing. There are no spots, lintmarks or hairlines visible nor is there any break in the frost on the cheek or face of Liberty.

The highest graded PCGS 1892 with a Deep Cameo appearance prior to the slabbing of this coin was a 64, so there are no good auction comparables.

If you collect Proof gold coins by type and you have been waiting for a coin that offers the right combination of rarity and appearance…well, what are you waiting for?
