Amongst the four CC half eagles from the 1890′s, the 1890-CC is one of the scarcer issues and it is not easily found in grades above MS62 to MS63.
This piece is clean, frosty and choice with good luster and pleasing natural medium orange-gold color which deepens towards the border. There is some minor mint-made planchet roughness on the obverse which limits the grade but the amount of marks is quite limited for this issue.
The last MS62 1890-CC half eagle to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which brought $3,055 in Heritage’s 1/13 sale; it was not approved by CAC.
Trends jumps to $8,000 in MS63, making a nice MS62 such as this a very practical acquisition for most CC gold collectors.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 10 finer.
