The 1884 half eagle is a generic issue in circulated grades and it is only marginally scarce in MS60 to MS62. In MS63, this date is very scarce and it is very rare in MS64 or finer.
This choice, frosty example is the only MS63+ graded by PCGS. It is very frosty and really close to grading a full MS64 but there are just a few too many scuffs in the left obverse field. Still, this is clearly not your “average” MS63!
A PCGS MS63 brought $1,410 as Heritage 3/14: 10632. A PCGS MS64, which was similar in quality to this MS63+, realized $3,335 as Heritage 1/12: 26617.
Here is one of the better condition rarities available in the half eagle series for less than $2,000!
