The 1860-C is the second-to-last half eagle made at the Charlotte mint before it was closed in 1861. It has a low mintage of 14,813 and it is regarded as one of the scarcer half eagles from this facility, especially in AU55 and above.
As with all 1860-C half eagles, this example is graded solely by the obverse as the reverse was prepared with an incomplete die. There is a good amount of luster on the obverse with good detail and nice light green-gold and russet colors. A small reverse mark at the inner portion of the left wing of the eagle serves as identification.
The last PCGS AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was Heritage 1/08: 4274 which realized $6,325. There have been just five PCGS AU58′s offered at auction since 2000 with the record price being $9,200, set by Bass IV: 477.
I like this coin better than some of the Mint State 1860-C half eagles which I have seen offered during the last few years and at around half the price of a MS61/62 coin, this seems like good value for the Charlotte half eagle collector.
