BD-4, R-2. Large Date, Large 5 variety. 1810 is a very fertile year for variety collectors in the half eagle series. There are four distinct issues of which the Large Date, Large 5 is the most available. This makes it a perfect choice for the type collector seeking a single example of the popular Capped Bust Left type, struck from 1807 through 1812.
This is a decidedly original example with lovely deep reddish-gold and green colors on the obverse and the reverse. There is some light wear seen but it is even and there is good balance between the obverse and the reverse. The strike is somewhat better than usual for the issue and the surfaces are extremely clean with just a few small abrasions and no adjustments. This is a very choice example with the sort of charming “old gold” look that has become so hard to locate.
The last AU55 of this variety to sell at auction was Heritage 1/12: 6321, graded by PCGS, that realized $9,200. That coin had been cleaned at one time and lacked the original appearance that so many collectors of early gold are now clamoring for.
