While 144,000 were struck, only a few hundred 1852-O half dollars are known. This low survival rate is due to melting caused by a change in weight for silver coinage in 1853. Today, the 1852-O half dollar is scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and very rare in Uncirculated with fewer than 10 known in the latter range.
This semi-prooflike slider is lightly worn with splashes of green, lilac and grey and the obverse is more extensively toned than the reverse. Both sides show light marks and the detail is excellent for the issue.
The last PCGS AU58 example to sell at auction was Heritage 9/08: 2186 which brought $2,530. Today, the market for better date Seated coinage in collector grades is stronger.
An attractive example of a scarce, undervalued New Orleans half dollar.
