O-112, R-1. This distinctive naked-eye variety was caused when the mint engraver accidentally punched a 2 in the value thinking he was working on a quarter dollar reverse. It is not an especially scarce variety in lower grades but it becomes scarce as you ascend the grading ladder and nice, problem-free EF’s are not easily located.
This piece has nice multicolored pastels on the obverse border, probably from storage in a coin album. There is a good deal of luster and the obverse shows virtual AU50 detail; the reverse is less well defined as is typical.
A nice, appealing example of this important variety.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 17 finer.
