This is the relatively common but very popular variety which has the 5 in the value punched over an accidental 2. It is an early die state without any breaks on the reverse or extensive clashmarks. This variety becomes hard to find in properly graded AU nd it is quite scarce in any Uncirculated grade.
For the grade, this is a truly high end example with lovely deep lilac-grey surfaces with some silvery luster shooting through the stars and peripheral fiery orange-gold though some of the reverse border. There are a few small maarks in the left obverse field and the reverse is weakly struck at the upper center.
The last PCGS AU50 to sell at auction was back in the Heritage 10/11 sale. It had a severe dig on the obverse at 12:00 and it still brought $1,955.
The pleasing coin, with its “old time” appearance, would fit comfortably into a set of Bust Halves by Redbook variety.
CAC has approved five in this grade with 12 finer.
