With very few exceptions, all No Motto quarters are rare in Superb Gem Uncirculated and the 1860 is no exception. There are only a handful of true Gem 1860 quarters and this amazing example is likely the second finest known, after a sole PCGS MS66+ which was likely once in an NGC MS67 holder.

This stunning Gem is notable for its deep, dynamic toning. The obverse has a reddish-gold center framed by emerald and violet while the reverse is a scintillating blend of green, red and gold. These colors are brightened by fiery underlying luster which gives this coin the sort of visual appeal not often seen on any coin of this era. A pair of tiny marks on Liberty’s right arm are likely the only things holding this coin back from an MS67 grade.

Heritage 1/10: 2514, also graded MS66 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $15,525 and while it was a superb coin, it wasn’t as pretty as the current piece.

This coin was formerly in the Gardner collection and if it was good enough for Gene–likely the greatest collector of Seated coins ever–it’s good enough for your collection!

CAC has approved three with none finer.

Ex Heritage 10/14: 98369 (as NGC MS66 CAC) where it realized $14,100.
