Until the discovery of the S.S. Central America shipwreck, higher grade 1856-S double eagles were very scarce. Today, this date is more available but examples with natural color and surfaces are not often seen.
This choice, lustrous orange-gold piece has the sort of soft,satiny texture which is seen on unmolested 1856-S double eagles. There are a few scuffs in the left obverse field which can be seen with the naked eye; the reverse is choice.
The last auction record for a PCGS AU55 (non-shipwreck) of this date is $3,290 in Heritage’s March 2013 sale; that coin was not approved by CAC.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 12 finer.
