C-1, B-1. (Low R-7 as a Proof).
This is an unheralded rarity with fewer than a dozen known. The 1850 half cent was thrust into the limelight recently when a PCGS PR65RB sold for $63,250 as Lot 198 in Goldberg’s sale of the famed Missouri Cabinet.
The present example is a solid coin for the grade with reflective surfaces and full squared borders. The color is a handsome mahogany brown with especially nice shading seen on the reverse. There is a small spot between stars three and four on the obverse and a few other smaller spots as well; the reverse is of Gem quality.
Only one PCGS graded PR64BN 1850 half cent has sold at auction since 2006 and it brought $9,106 as Lot 39 in Goldberg’s 6/14 sale.
CAC has recorded two coins in this grade/color with one finer (PR65BN).
