C-1, B-1. R-5 as a Proof.

An unknown number (50-75?) of proof half cents were produced in 1833 and, of these, around half of the original mintage is known today. When available, the typical Proof 1833 half cent grades PR63 to PR64 and is seldom found with mint red.

This unquestionable Proof is reflective and well detailed with broad, squared rims. The color is a deep brown hue with some slight golden pastels in the obverse fields. There are a few spots on both sides. This is a pleasing example for the date and grade.

There are some good auction comparables to look at. Heritage 10/12: 3081, graded PR64BN by NGC, sold for $9,400 while a PCGS/CAC PR64BN went reasonably for $8,740 in Stacks Bowers 2011 ANA sale. Scotsman sold an NGC PR64BN in their 7/11 auction for $9,480. None of these three coins was finer in quality than the present piece.

Proof half cents of this quality and rarity are significantly undervalued and this is likely to change in early 2014 when the Missouri Cabinet is sold at auction.
