The 1854-S eagle is a numismatically significant issue as the first date of this denomination to be struck at the new San Francisco mint. It is only moderately scarce in the lower AU grades and its relative affordability makes it popular with collectors.

This light orange-gold example has some weakness of strike on the radial lines of the stars but the centers are well defined. There is some luster seen in the protected areas and a moderate number of abrasions in the fields.

There have been 15 AU50 examples of this date sold at auction since the beginning of 2007 but only two have been graded by PCGS. One sold for $1,725 in Heritage’s 3/11 auction; the other, given a gold CAC sticker and clearly undergraded, brought an amazing $8,813 in Heritage’s 8/12 sale.
