Large Date variety, designated by PCGS.
Varieties of 1854-O eagle are known with a Small Date and a Large Date. The latter uses a date logotype intended for silver dollars. It is moderately scarce in the AU50 to AU55 range but it becomes rare in AU58 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated.
This is a choice lustrous example with natural medium russet and green-gold hues on the obverse and the reverse. There is enough body to suggest an AU55 grade but some moderate, shallow handling marks preclude a higher grade.
Only two PCGS AU53′s have been sold at auction since 2012. The nicer of the two brought $2,820 as Heritage 1/13: 7326; it was not approved by CAC.
A nice example and good value at current price levels.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 10 finer.
