The 1852 is a common issue in circulated grades and is evenly sometimes available in the lowest Uncirculated grades. But it is extremely rare in properly graded MS62 and it appears likely that this fresh-to-the-market example is actually the second finest known 1852 eagle!

This very high end coin has a freshness about it which is unusual not only for the date but for the entire No Motto type. It is very frosty with lovely natural rose and orange-gold color. The strike is razor sharp with just a bit of weakness seen on the radial lines in the stars. The surfaces are lightly marked and were it not for a small scrape in the left obverse field and a shallow mark on the cheek of Liberty, this coin would clearly grade MS63.

There are just three auction records for PCGS MS62 examples of this date since the 1980′s and none since 2003. The finest known 1852 eagle, graded MS66 by PCGS, sold for $253,000 as Heritage 1/08: 3261.

Back a few years ago when few people collected Liberty Head eagles by date, the importance of this coin might have been realized by just a handful of collectors. Today, with this denomination now in favor, its importance should be widely recognized.

This is the highest graded 1852 eagle which has been approved by CAC.
