The 1846-O is a scarcer New Orleans eagle which remains undervalued, in my opinion. It is not often seen in grades higher than EF45 to AU50 and it is among the more difficult dates in this series to locate with above-average eye appeal.
The lustrous light yellow-gold example has a lot of “meat” for an EF45 and while visibly abraded, it is less scuffy than normal for the date and grade. The weakness of strike seen at the obverse center is diagnostic for this variety.
A choice PCGS EF45 example brought $2,291 as Heritage 2/14: 5351 while a low-end PCGS EF45 realized $1,645 as Heritage 12/14: 4645. I regard the present example as being midway between these two coins in terms of its quality.
