The 1846-O is one of the scarcer No Motto eagles from New Orleans and I have long regarded it as one of the more undervalued gold coins from this mint. It is not often seen above AU53 to AU55 and it is very rare with original color and a decent quality strike.
This choice, original example shows deep natural green-gold color. There is very little actual wear but enough abrasions appear on both the obverse and reverse to limit the grade. The strike is exceptional and this seems to be an early die state with no lapping as on many.
No 1846-O eagle in AU53 has sold at auction since April 2009. The last 1846/5-O in this grade brought $4,313 as Stacks 1/11: 5401.
