The 1845 is one of three scarce, undervalued Philadelphia eagles from the 1840′s. It is easier to locate than the 1844 and 1846 but it is not often seen in AU and higher, especially with choice surfaces and natural color. It is very rare in AU55 and above and I know of just two Uncirculated pieces: an NGC MS61 and a PCGS MS62.

If you collect Liberty Head eagles and like your coins dirty, dirty, dirty, then you will love this piece. It has numerous areas of dirt caked into the recesses and this is a nice contrast to natural yellow and greenish-gold hues on both sides. There is more luster present than one might expect with a coin “only” graded AU50 and there are only a few minor scuffs seen with the naked eye. This coin has a great appearance but be warned that it is not for everyone.

The last PCGS AU50 example to sell at auction brought $1,955 all the way back in 2007.

CAC has approved three in this grade with two finer (55 and 58). Only seven 1845 eagles have so far been approved by CAC.
