In the higher AU grades, this variety is very scarce as evidenced by its low PCGS population of four in AU55 with six finer. I think it is even harder to find than these numbers suggest as a few of the coins graded AU55 by PCGS are not choice and at least a few of the AU58′s are resubmissions. I know of just two in Uncirculated with the finest being the PCGS MS623 which is ex Bass II: 1324.
This coin was formerly in an NGC AU58 holder and it is easy to see why as it shows attractive dusky green-gold and sunflower hues with lightly abraded surfaces and a considerable amount of luster. As always, the reverse has an extensive die crack through the right wing into the shield but this has not affected the overall strike.
No PCGS AU55 examples have sold at auction since Heritage 1/08: 4387 which brought $2,530.
It is not likely that a finer 1842 Small Date eagle will be made available to collectors in the near future.
