Coinage of eagles began at the New Orleans mint in 1841. The 1842-O is the first collectable issue (the 1841-O is rare and not often seen above VF/EF) and it is almost never seen above AU53 to AU55 grades. The 1842-O eagle is, in my opinion, very rare and much underrated with natural color and surfaces and I have not seen many pieces which haven’t been repeatedly scrubbed.
This lovely example shows totally original deep green-gold color with choice, lightly marked surfaces. It is well detailed and very choice for the grade with strong claims to the AU55 level. I haven’t handled a better 1842-O eagle since the PCGS AU58 I sold in April 2014 and even that coin wasn’t CAC approved.
Remarkably, only one PCGS AU53 has sold at auction since 1999 and it realized $4,583 as Goldberg 6/14: 1889; it was not approved by CAC.
This exceptional 1842-O eagle should generate considerable interest.
CAC has approved three in this grade with five finer.
