The 1842-O is the second eagle produced at the New Orleans mint. It is much scarcer than the 1843-O, 1844-O and 1845-O and it is not often seen above AU50 to AU53. A nice AU coin with original color and surfaces is extremely scarce.
Struck in dark green-gold and showing a considerable amount of luster, this piece has great overall eye appeal for the issue. It is well detailed and original with just a few too many light scuffs on the obverse to grade AU55. That said, it is one of the nicer circulated 1842-O eagle that I have handled in the last few years.
There have been two auction records for this date in AU53 since early 2010, both slabbed by NGC and both sold by Heritage; one brought $2,703 while the other realized $3,738. The present example is far choicer than either of these.
An important coin for the collector of New Orleans eagles.
CAC has approved just two examples in this grade with one finer (MS60).
