EXTREMELY RARE PROOF 1877 GOLD DOLLAR; MINTAGE OF 20
A miniscule 20 Proofs were struck this year, giving this date the status of the lowest mintage figure for Type Three Proof dollars made after 1858 along with the 1874 and the 1875. There are an estimated dozen known and this includes at least two which are Impaired as well as another two in museum collections. When available, the typical Proof 1877 gold dollar tends to come in the PR64 to PR65 grade range.
This is an unquestionable Proof with fully reflective surfaces, squared edges and an orange-peel texture not seen on Prooflike business strikes. The fields show minor signs of handling but have not been cleaned. For the grade, this is a visually appealing coin.
An NGC PR63CAM (not this coin, in my opinion) sold for $8,225 as Stacks Bowers 2/14: 2131.
There are very few Proof gold coins with mintages figures as low as 20 coins and with the exception of this 1877 gold dollar and a handful of other coins, most are priced in the $25,000-50,000++ range.
