Only 3,900 business strike 1877 gold dollars were made. This issue is not hard to find in grades up to MS64 but Gems are rare and superb pieces are extremely hard to find.
This fresh semi-prooflike example exhibits nice warm orange-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. It is a Gem in the strictest sense of the word with clean surfaces and a great naked-eye appearance.
The last PCGS MS65 with CAC approval to sell at auction was Heritage 12/13: 3787 which brought a strong $6,463.
Gem mid-19th century US gold coins at under $5,000 seem like a great value play to me and I try to buy them whenever I am able.
CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
