1873 Gold Dollars are known with Open 3 and Closed 3 varieties. The former is far more available and it is easy to locate in grades up to MS64. Gems are scarce and superb examples are very rare.
The present example is among the finest known for he issue and it shows rich mint frost below light natural orange-gold color. The surfaces are nearly perfect and an MS67 grade (and a five figure price tag) would be highly feasible were it not for a few faint scuffs on the obverse.
An NGC MS66 with CAC approval recently sold for $5,581 as Heritage 1/14: 6391 and a PCGS MS67 with CAC approval brought $11,700 as Heritage 4/13: 4446.
This MS66+ example is exceed by just two coins at PCGS: a solitary MS67 and an MS68.
CAC has approved five in MS66 with two finer; this is the only MS66+ with CAC approval.
