Only 1,825 Closed 3 1873 gold dollars were made and of the 200 or so which exist today, fewer than ten grade MS64 or higher. The finest I know of is a single PCGS MS66 which sold for $13,200 all the way back in May 1997 and most specialized collections contain an example grading MS63 or below.

This example has a prooflike obverse and a satiny reverse which is not uncommon for the variety. The obverse shows a number of clashmarks and only the L shows on the headband; the Gem quality reverse looks like an entirely different coin. A few very wispy lines in the right field narrowly remove this coin from the Gem level and it is extremely choice for the grade.

Heritage 1/14: 6392, graded MS64 by NGC and approved by CAC, sold for $7,638; it was Prooflike on both sides although not designated as such by NGC.

It is my opinion that this undervalued coin should be worth considerably more in all grades than at current levels.

Ex Heritage 4/13: 5441, where it sold for $6,463.

CAC has approved four in this grade with none finer.
