The 1864 is the second rarest Civil War gold dollar after the 1863. It is also the third rarest gold dollar from the Philadelphia mint after the 1863 and the 1875 despite its still-affordable status. The 1864 tends to be found either in circulated grades or as a Gem and there are not many known in the MS62 to MS64 range.
This is an extremely early die state which lacks the extensive clashing seen on most business strikes of this date. It is original and housed in an older pre-barcode holder with lovely natural orange-gold and yellow colors seen on the obverse and the reverse. There are a few small marks on both sides which limit the grade but this piece is uncommonly choice and fresh in appearance.
No PCGS graded MS63 gold dollar has sold at auction since 2002 and the last MS63 in an NGC holder was sold all the way back in 2008.
An important coin for the gold dollar specialist or the Civil War collector.
CAC has approved one in MS63 with six finer.
Ex Heritage 11/02: 14153 where it brought $2,070.
