Along with the 1862, the 1861 is the most available Civil War era gold dollar in higher grades and these are certainly the only gold coins from this era which can be found in Gem Uncirculated. The 1861 is moderately scarce in MS65 but it is seldom found above this. If available, a PCGS MS66 with CAC approval would cost in the $6,000-7,000 range.

This frosty Gem example has nice luster and pleasing orange-gold color. There are a few striking peculiarities on the obverse, as made, including a slight swelling below the truncation, an unfinished area at ICA in AMERICA and adjustment mark-style lines on the rim at 12:00 to 2:00. The reverse is superb and virtually as made.

The last APR for a PCGS MS65 1861 gold dollar with CAC approval is Heritage 2/13: 4715 (in an old green holder) which sold for $3,525. An NGC MS65 with CAC approval sold for $2,820 as Heritage 8/12: 4419.

A nice Type Three type coin or well-suited for an advanced collection of Civil War gold.
