The 1860-S is one of the more available of the five Type Three dollars from the San Francisco mint but it is a scarce date in properly graded MS63 with maybe half a dozen known as well as another three or four in higher grades. The finest known is a CAC approved PCGS MS65 owned by Steve Duckor which will be sold this summer at Heritage’s 2015 ANA auction.
This fresh example is one of the nicer 1860-S dollars that I have offered for sale. It has a very wholesome appearance with exceptional luster, rich yellow gold color and a quality of strike not often seen on this issue. A few tiny ticks at the centers narrowly remove this coin from consideration as a 64 but it is extremely choice for the grade with uncommon eye appeal for the issue.
No PCGS MS63 1860-S dollar has sold at auction since Heritage 5/08: 1352, which was low end, in my opinion, but still sold for $5,319. No CAC approved MS63 has ever sold at auction.
If available, a CAC approved MS64 would sell for more than $10,000 and would likely not be much finer than the present piece.
CAC has approved four in this grade with just one finer (MS65).
