The mint was ambitious when it produced 154 Proof 1860 gold dollars; there was clearly not enough demand for this many coins and most were melted. Today, it is likely that 30-40 Proofs are known with most in the PR63 to PR65 range.

This choice, reflective example shows nice natural medium orange-gold color and it is clearly a full-blown Proof with highly mirrored fields, squared edges and a bold strike. A few contact marks can be seen in the right obverse field and this is likely the result of storage.

The last PCGS PR64 1860 gold dollar to sell at auction was a non-cameo that brought $9,488 in Superior’s 2/06 auction.

This is the earliest date Proof gold coin that most collectors will ever be able to afford and the fact that it is priced below $10,000 makes it, in my opinion, a highly desirable piece.
