The 1859-S is one of only five Type Three gold dollars produced at the San Francisco mint. This issue had a mintage of only 15,000 and it saw extensive circulation in the booming pre-Civil War western economy of Northern California. It is very scarce in the higher circulated grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This gem slider has virtually no wear and it sports lustrous, mark-free surfaces. Both sides are covered with very attractive rich deep reddish-gold color and I can not recall having seen more than a handful of circulated examples of this date which showed this much eye appeal.
The last PCGS AU58 to sell at auction (which also happened to be approved by CAC) realized $2,300 as Heritage 9/9: 1425. Since then eight NGC AU58′s have crossed the block.
If you’ve ever contemplated assembling a set of nice San Francisco gold dollars, this might be an excellent place to begin.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with none finer.
