Colonel Green/ Eric Newman Pedigree, as identified by NGC.
The 1859-S is one of only five Type Three gold dollars produced at the San Francisco mint. This issue had a mintage of only 15,000 and it saw extensive circulation in the booming pre-Civil War western economy of Northern California. It is very scarce in the higher circulated grades, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.
This is one of the more original examples of this date which I have seen and both sides show natural green-gold color atop choice, satiny fields. For the date and grade, the eye appeal is excellent.
In 2011, two other CAC approved 1859-S gold dollars in NGC AU58 sold for $1,840 but they were not as nice as this example and they lacked its provenance.
I think the San Francisco gold dollars offer the collector exceptional value in comparison to their Southern branch mint counterparts.
Ex Heritage 11/14: 3183 at $1,763; purchased for $35 by Eric Newman from the Green estate.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with none higher.
