RARE UNCIRCULATED 1857-D GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Last Sold by me in late 2012 as part of the famous Vasquez Rocks Collection of Gold Dollars and there described as follows:

Variety 9-L

“For many years, I have considered the 1857-D to be one of the two most undervalued gold dollars from Dahlonega along with the 1850-D. Of the 3,533 produced, there are an estimated 150-200 known with most grading EF40 to AU50. The 1857-D is very rare in Uncirculated with seven to ten known to me. The finest seem to be a group of three or four graded MS62 and none have appeared since the Duke’s Creek coin (then graded MS62 by NGC but now in a PCGS MS62 holder) was sold in April 2006.

To better understand this coin, you need to appreciate how well struck it is. The obverse shows more detail than usual for the issue with nearly complete border beads and some separation on the hair strands; the reverse shows a more typical strike with weakness visible on the bow below and to the right of the date and mintmark. Both sides are lustrous with light yellow-gold color. The surfaces show numerous clashmarks and raised die elements but are lustrous and have just a few small handling marks.

The last PCGS MS61 1857-D gold dollar to sell at auction was Heritage 1/08: 3686, which brought $11,500. Since 1999 there has been a total of six MS61’s (four in PCGS holders and two slabbed by NGC) that have ranged from a low of $8,287 to a high of $12,075.

This remains the only PCGS/CAC Uncirculated 1857-D gold dollar which I have sold since the Duke’s Creek PCGS MS62 which I sold to a Midwestern collector a decade ago.

CAC has approved just this one example in MS61 with only two higher (MS62).”
