WONDERFUL GEM 1856 SLANT 5 GOLD DOLLAR
Simpson Collection Pedigree, indicated on holder by PCGS.
Varieties of 1856 gold dollar are known with a Slanting 5 and an Upright 5. The former is more available and it can be seen, from time to time, in grades as high as MS65. Superb Gems, grading MS66 and above, are very rare and are demand as type coins and first-year-of-issue pieces.
This is an exceptional coin and was formerly in the collection of uber collector Bob Simpson. It is a pristine Gem with exquisite rose and green-gold splashes over a base of rich orange-gold. The strike is sharp and the surfaces are nearly perfect with just a few small luster breaks on the obverse and a tick or two at the reverse center.
The only CAC approved PCGS MS66 to sell in recent years was Heritage 4/12: 6328 which realized $6,325. The coin which Bob Simpson replaced this with, graded MS68+ and with the coveted Duckor/Akers pedigree, sold for a strong $42,300 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 4253.
A great piece for the type collector looking for a superb quality Type Three gold dollar which isn’t a “boring” date from the 1880′s.
CAC has approved five in this grade with just one finer (68+).
