The 1855-O is numismatically significant as the only Type Two gold dollar from the New Orleans mint. It is a common issue in circulated grades but attractive, original examples in collector grades are not easy to locate.
This is a truly choice coin for the grade with clean surfaces, good detail and rich natural reddish-gold color which is “right” for the issue. I have seen inferior 1855-O gold dollars in AU50 and even AU53 holders.
The last PCGS EF45 1855-O gold dollar with CAC approval to sell at auction brought $1,645 as Heritage 1/14: 9988. The present example, in my opinion,, is visually superior.
An affordable yet very interesting gold dollar.
CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 49 finer.
