The 1855-C gold dollar is one of the most numismatically significant issues from the Charlotte mint. It is a one-year type featuring the short-lived Type Two design and only 9,803 were made. It is generally available in VF and EF grades but most are poorly made and show numerous post-striking issues.

While not as well struck as some 1855-C gold dollars, this piece was produced on a good quality planchet with no severe areas of roughness. As on many, there are mint-made clashmarks surrounding both sides of the portrait. There is some luster on both sides as well with nice medium orange-gold colors seen.

No PCGS graded EF40 example of this date has sold at auction since Heritage 5/09: 1471 which brought $5,175. An NGC EF40, not approved by CAC and not as choice as the current coin, just brought $4,406 as Heritage 12/13: 3780.

This is an issue with strong multiple levels of demand and it is one of just 10 1855-C gold dollars to have been approved by CAC.

CAC has approved just this one coin in EF40 with seven finer.
