The 1855-C is numismatically significant as a one-year type coin and it is the only Type Two issue from this mint. It is more available than its counterpart the 1855-D but it is scarce in properly graded AU50 and very rare with original color and surfaces.

This is a choice, well-made example with natural green-gold color with slight orange shadings. The obverse has a few areas of mint-made roughness as often seen while the reverse is well made and shows a full date and strong mintmark. There are a few small ticks in the left obverse field and a well-hidden line in the planchet on the reverse from the rim at 9:00 down into the wreath.

There has never been a PCGS AU50 example of this date with CAC approval sold at auction. Of the last fifteen examples in AU50 (sold since 2008) only two have been in PCGS holders and the last of these, ex Heritage 9/13: 6701 at $6,169, was vastly inferior to the present example.

A pleasing example of this popular one-year type.
