NICE UNCIRCULATED 1851-D GOLD DOLLAR
Variety 3-E.
The 1851-D is the second most available Type One gold dollar from this mint but it is many times scarcer than the most common issue, the 1849-D. There are around two dozen or so 1851-D dollars known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. Most Uncirculated examples are bright and poorly produced, leading to inferior overall eye appeal.
This is a choice, attractive 1851-D dollar with even deep natural green-gold and russet hues covering the obverse and the reverse. The surfaces are choice with few marks noted and the strike is much sharper than usual with a very sharp date and mintmark. This is a late die state from noticeably clashed dies and there are two stars from the obverse clearly visible on the reverse at 6:00 and 7:00.
No PCGS MS61 example of this date has ever sold at auction. Heritage 3/15: 3198, graded MS62 by PCGS, sold for $7,638 and was flatly struck with bright surfaces.
This would make a great addition to a date set of Dahlonega dollars or it would be a fine type representative of the Dahlonega Type One design.
