The 1850-O is the scarcest gold dollar from the New Orleans mint by a large margin. It is sometimes available in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it is very scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare in MS63. The best I have seen is a PCGS MS64 which is ex Stacks 1/07: 5004 at $16,100.
This is a choice, lustrous example with uncommonly clean satiny surfaces. The obverse and reverse both show a blend of rose, orange-gold and greenish colors. There are some scuffs in the fields which limit the grade but this piece is high end for an MS62 with great detail and lovely overall eye appeal.
The only auction record for a PCGS MS62 1850-O gold dollar with CAC approval is Heritage 1/13: 6760, which brought a strong $5,581.
I doubt if there are more than a handful of nicer examples known and this would be a great addition to a high end set of New Orleans dollars.
CAC has approved three in this grade and just one finer (MS63).
