PLEASING 1824/2 DIME

JR-1, R-3.

All 1824 dimes are overdates and two varieties are known. JR-1 is common and it has a flat top to the 1 in the date. Uncirculated pieces are available up to the MS63 level without much difficulty but this issue is scarce in properly graded MS64 and rare in grades higher than this.

This pleasing, frosty example shows a mostly untoned central obverse framed by splashes of bluish-green and lilac; the reverse shows similar shades but is a bit more extensively toned. Some minor weakness of strike at the centers is as expected for this die pair. A few tiny marks in the right obverse field are really all that keeps this attractive piece from consideration at a higher grade level.

There have been five auction records for PCGS MS64 1824/2 dimes since the beginning of 2009 and prices have been fairly consistent, ranging from a low of $7,050 to a high of $8,050.

This piece is likely in the Condition Census for the date and the only higher graded 1824/2 dime to sell in recent memory was the interestingly toned NGC 66 which brought $70,500 as Gardner 2: 98231 in October 2014.

Ex Heritage 4/09: 89 (where it sold for $7,475) and earlier sold as Lot 6185 in the Heritage 2/05 auction where it brought $5,750.
