Variety 1.
The 1852-C is the seventh rarest quarter eagle from the Charlotte mint. There are around 125-150 known with most in the VF-EF range. In Uncirculated, this is an extremely rare date with just three or four known. The present example is likely the second best and it trails only the Bass II: 453 coin, graded MS63 by PCGS.
This coin is literally “as struck” and it shows very good central detail and wonderful frosty luster on both sides. The color is a natural medium yellow-gold with some slightly deeper hues in the fields. The surfaces are clean and choice and this is a coin with great overall eye appeal.
A PCGS MS62 has never appeared at auction. This exact coin sold for $18,400 as Heritage 1/12: 4760. At the time, it was in an NGC holder and not approved by CAC.
With the Bass II coin mentioned above off the market in the finest collection of Liberty Head quarter eagles ever assembled, this is for all intents and purposes the finest available. It is listed in the Condition Census in my book on Charlotte gold as the second finest known 1852-C quarter eagle and it is a very important coin for the specialist.
CAC has approved one in this grade with none finer.
Ex Heritage 1/12: 4760 (as NGC MS62), Fisher collection, Dingler collection and Elrod collection.
