The 1852-C is the seventh rarest of 20 quarter eagles made at the Charlotte mint. There are around 125-150 known from the original mintage of 9,772 and most are seen in VF-EF grades. Properly graded AU’s with good eye appeal and choice surfaces are very rare.

This is one of the few choice, original examples of this date that I have handled in the last few years. It is better struck than average with only minor weakness at the centers and the surfaces are extremely clean with no marks of note. Both sides show nice natural green-gold and orange hues. The eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.

No AU50 examples of this date have sold at auction since October 2010. The last PCGS AU50 was ex DLRC 4/09: 1207 and this brought $3,910.

In my experience, this is one of the harder dates in the series to find with a nice appearance.
