As with the similarly dated half eagle, the 1850 quarter eagle is scarcer than its mintage would suggest. In Uncirculated, most examples are scuffy and processed with MS60 to MS61 being typical quality; properly graded MS62′s are very scarce and this date is rare in MS63 and higher.

This well-detailed example is an early die state lacking the weakness on the stars sometimes found. It shows pleasing natural green-gold color and strong luster with some minor scuffing in the left obverse field limiting the grade.

There were three PCGS MS62′s sold at auction in 2013. The lowest price realized was $1,528 and this was for a coin with a large obverse stain; the highest price was $1,998 for a non-CAC example.

I have worked to assemble many sets of Liberty Head quarter eagles and this date, for some reason, always proves to e tricky to locate.

CAC has approved five in this grade with only one finer (MS63).
