The 1849 quarter eagle is a scarce and undervalued issue which is hard to find even in the middle to higher AU grades. It is quite scarce in Uncirculated with probably no more than 10-15 known; mostly in the MS60 to MS61 range. The finest I am aware of are a pair of PCGS MS64′s, neither of which have appeared at auction.
This coin lacks the rub and outright wear that you might expect on an MS61 with no luster breaks in the fields and unmolested highlights. It shows nice even yellow-gold color with typical frost as seen on higher grade Philadelphia quarter eagles from the late 1840′s. A patch of raised die lines below the date is diagnostic.
There have been only five auction records for MS61 1849 quarter eagles since 2007.
