Variety 1.

The 1848-C is among the more available Charlotte quarter eagles in lower grades but it is rare and very undervalued in higher grades. Collector grade examples with natural color and surfaces are not often seen and many later die state coins (from the Variety 2 die pair) show moderate to severe weakness of strike from buckling.

This pleasing, original piece has medium to deep green-gold color with a good amount of dirt in the protected areas. The strike is sharp and even and the surfaces show no severe marks. There is a small, faint area of toning near the bridge of Liberty’s nose which serves as identification.

Only three EF45 examples of this date have sold at auction since April 2008 and none since 2010.

A nice, affordable example of a date that is rarely found with good overall eye appeal.
