The 1846-D is a reasonably common quarter eagle from this mint but it is seen less often in collector grades than the 1843-D and the 1845-D.
This is a solid coin for the grade with good overall detail, no serious marks and pleasing medium orange-gold color. As often is seen on this issue, the reverse appears more worn than the obverse and this is on account of weakness of strike.
The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction brought $3,055 as Heritage 3/15: 4120.
Nice quality for less than $3,000.
