The 1844-D is one of the more available quarter eagles from this mint. It is available in AU grades although it is not readily found in properly graded AU55 to AU58. as with all quarter eagles from this mint, it is rare in Mint State.
This bright, lustrous example is very well struck for the issue with better detail in the centers than normal. There are a few small clashmarks which can be seen at the throat and in back of the head as well as on the reverse. The surfaces are otherwise clean and lack the severe marks found on most 1844-D quarter eagles.
The last PCGS AU55 example to sell at auction is ex Heritage 5/12: 4780 which realized $3,738.
