The 1844-C is one of the four rarest Charlotte quarter eagles in higher grades and it is clearly among the hardest quarter eagles of the entire type to locate with original color and surfaces.
This is one of the few well struck 1844-C quarter eagles I can recall having seen and it shows nearly full radial lines within the stars and only slight weakness at the centers. The surfaces are very choice save for a small old hook-like scratch in front of the 1 in the date and a good amount of satiny luster can be seen on both sides. The color is excellent with medium to deep natural green-gold accentuated by splashes of reddish-gold which are strongest around the outlines of the stars.
The last auction record for this date in AU55 is ex Heritage 4/12: 6372 at $4,744; this coin was graded by NGC. A PCGS AU55 brought $4,888 as Heritage 1/10: 3824. No CAC approved examples in AU55 have ever crossed the block.
If you collect Charlotte quarter eagles by date, I don’t have to tell you how significant this impressive 1844-C is.
CAC has approved this one example in AU55 with four finer.
