Large Date variety.

In terms of overall rarity, the 1843-O Large Date is the second most difficult New Orleans quarter eagle to find after the 1845-O. The population figures show a decent number graded AU55 to AU58 but many of these are subpar and properly grade examples with original color and surfaces are very scarce.

This is an evenly worn example with light friction seen on both sides. The obverse color is an interesting and immediately appealing blend of russet in the fields changing to a “tear away” light green-gold shade. The obverse is immaculate with no marks of note; the reverse shows a few small ticks below STATES OF; the color is a more even lemon-gold shade.

The last PCGS AU55 example of this variety to sell at auction was ex Heritage 1/08: 3835 which brought $3,450.

If you are assembling a nice set of AU New Orleans quarter eagles and you want a solid PCGS/CAC example, this piece is perfect for you.

CAC has approved five in this grade with 15 finer.
