SOLD- $2.50 – 1842-D NGC EF45 CAC
Serial Number 3473559-001
PCGS Lookup Number 7725
Variety 3-F. Repunched 18 in the date as on all known examples.
The 1842-D is one of the truly scarce quarter eagles from this mint with fewer than 100 known from the original mintage of just 4,643. It is seen most often in the VF-EF grades but it is extremely hard to locate with natural color and surfaces.
This choice example is one of the best “collector quality” 1842-D quarter eagles which I have handled or seen. It shows very pleasing natural green-gold color with deeper reddish hues towards the borders on both sides. It is well struck and evenly worn with good detail and choice, mark-free surfaces. The eye appeal is far better than average for the date and grade.
Since August 2010, there have been four auction records for this date in EF45. Three of these coins have been in PCGS holders while one has been graded by NGC; none have been approved by CAC. The prices range from a low of $4,713 (for a not very nice example) to a high of $5,980 (for a very nice example).
Along with the 1840-D and 1841-D, this is one of the really tough early date quarter eagles from Dahlonega and examples in this price range with original surfaces and eye appeal are almost never seen.
CAC has approved just this one coin in EF45 with four finer.
