Variety 1-A; early die state.

The 1840-D is numismatically significant as the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from this mint. It is the second or third rarest issue in the set, trailing the 1856-D and possibly the 1855-D but it is unquestionably the rarest Dahlonega quarter eagle in higher grades, especially with original color and surfaces.

This fresh-to-the-market example is remarkable for a number of reasons. First, it shows an amazing strike for the date; especially given that the 1840-D quarter eagle is almost never seen well detailed. Secondly, it is a very early die state without the shattering cracks seen on most examples. Most importantly, it is exceptionally choice for the date and grade with undipped, natural surfaces which sport rich russet color complimented by reddish and honey splashes.

Heritage 1/13: 6872, graded AU55+ and approved by CAC, sold for $25,850. I believe the present example is every bit as nice if not even a bit more choice.

This piece is clearly in the Condition Census and it is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector of high quality Dahlonega quarter eagles.
